What is the XXXIII ISSCT Congress – Canevolution Summit 2028?
It is the leading global meeting point for innovation, science and sustainability in the sugarcane agroindustry.
This event will bring ISSCT members together in Guatemala. The International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists – ISSCT is an organisation dedicated to the advancement of the sector and the well-being of its associated communities.
The Congress promotes scientific research, encourages the adoption of new technologies and facilitates the exchange of knowledge and commercial opportunities to support the professional development of its participants.
When will Canevolution Summit 2028 take place?
Dates: From 28 January to 5 February 2028.
Where will it take place?
The Congress will have three stages: Pre-Congress in Antigua Guatemala and the South Coast; Congress in Guatemala City; and Post-Congress in Quetzaltenango.
Who can attend Canevolution Summit 2028?
The Congress welcomes ISSCT members. Membership is open to all individuals and organisations involved in the study, application or dissemination of sugar cane technology.
Do I need to be an ISSCT member to participate?
Yes. To participate in the Congress, attendees must have an active ISSCT membership.

Can I register for the Congress if my membership is not yet active?
No. To register, you must have an active ISSCT membership.

What activities are included in the Pre-Congress?
A technical experience to gain first-hand insight into Guatemala’s sugar cane agroindustry: factory operations, harvesting and field activities.
What topics will be addressed during the Congress?
Agriculture, industry, biology and by-products.
What activities are included in the Post-Congress?
Participants will learn about the production experience of Ron Zacapa Centenario, an internationally awarded rum, and take part in connection, tourism and cultural activities in Quetzaltenango, linked to Guatemala’s highlands, nature and traditions.
When will the full agenda be available?
Updates will be shared in upcoming newsletters and on our website.
Will there be a trade exhibition?
Yes. The Congress will include an interesting trade exhibition.
Will there be activities for accompanying persons?
Yes. There will be a series of experiences designed for accompanying persons, as well as options to visit some of the country’s most emblematic tourism destinations during the Pre-Congress.

How can I submit an abstract for Canevolution Summit 2028?
Abstracts may be submitted online through the corresponding page, where submission guidelines will also be available.
What are the key dates for the submission of papers and posters?
March 31st 2027
Deadline to confirm the intention to submit a full paper and/or poster, and to send the title and outline of the proposal to the Editor.
April 15th 2027
Notification to authors.
June 30th 2027
Final deadline for the submission of full papers and posters.
Late submissions will not be accepted.
Will accepted papers be published?
Yes. All accepted papers will be published in the Congress Proceedings, which will be available for download on the ISSCT website.
For all approved papers included in the programme, the lead author must be registered to attend the Congress and present the work. The registration deadline is 30 June 2027.

Do I need a visa to enter Guatemala?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. If you need an invitation letter to apply for a visa, please refer to the Travel page.
What is the main arrival airport?
La Aurora International Airport, in Guatemala City.

What currency is used in Guatemala?
The official currency is the Guatemalan quetzal (GTQ). You may check the official current exchange rate on the Bank of Guatemala website.
What is Guatemala’s time zone?
Will there be hotels with preferred rates?

Are preferred rates guaranteed?
Preferred rates are subject to availability and to the conditions of each hotel.
Does the Congress manage bookings directly?
Each participant must make their booking directly with the hotel of their choice.
